Prescription Chinese Medicinal Formulas Yi bing tong zhi, Tong bing yi zhi The above famous Chinese medical saying is a characteristic of modern professional Chinese herbal medicine. It means that treatment is based primarily on the patient's personal Chinese pattern discrimination and not primarily on their Western disease diagnosis. Two people with the same disease, say a headache, could receive very different treatments based on their underlying pattern or overall condition at the time of diagnosis. Someone who is overweight, has headaches in the back of the head that come on with rainy weather and also suffers from gastrointestinal trouble needs very different medicinal herbs from someone who is thin, has migraine headaches with throbbing in the temple area and doesn't sleep well. During your initial office visit a physical exam is made and detailed history is collected. Based on the findings your pattern is determined and a personalized medicinal herbal prescription is developed. This is dispensed at your 2nd visit. Weekly checkins by phone or in person are needed to adjust the prescription as you respond to the herbs. Most people receive relief within 4-6 weeks of starting and regularly taking the herbs. Sometimes additional herbal pills are prescribed to consolidate or maintain the effect.
